Environmental Engineering and Science Foundation Announces Launch of Planned Giving Program

As part of its effort to grow its ability to act on its mandate of supporting education and related topics in environmental engineering and environmental science, the Environmental Engineering and Science Foundation has announced it is launching a planned giving program.

A planned giving program is a mechanism used by many charitable organizations as a way of making it easier for donors to make gifts. This is especially true for gifts that are combinations of traditional donor giving and estate planning in which a donor dedicates part of his/her estate to a not-for-profit recipient organization.

Information on the EES Foundation program can be viewed at eesfoundation.org/plannedgiving.

The Foundation's Board of Directors has chosen this route in order to do a better job of meeting its organizational mandate of promoting research and education in all aspects of environmental engineering and environmental science while making it easier for donors to make a gift of any size to the Foundation.

A key criterion of the program is a desire to accommodate different styles of giving and gifts of varying sizes. The program is accessible to donors making a regular small monthly contribution that is charged to a credit card. But the program also helps individuals looking to make a donation to the Foundation a part of their estate planning. The structures are in place to accommodate that level of giving as well.

The overall intent for creating the program is to generate a strong and steady level of support to the Foundation for its work in promoting environmental education. The most important element of the planned giving program is its potential to do a much better job of generating donations which can be turned into support for an expanding slate of environmental engineering education programs.

The Foundation recognizes that the environmental field is competing with a host of other academic disciplines to attract the best and brightest; the students who will be the next generation of leaders in the field they choose. The planned giving program will be a tool that the Foundation can use to build and sustain interest in an environmental career.

The bottom line for the program is its tapping the population of existing environmental engineers and scientists to help recruit and educate the next generation. Concern for the environment has never been higher. The planned giving program is a way of building the resource base that will be needed to convert today's students into tomorrow's environmental problem solvers.

Find out more at the EES Foundation website (http://www.eesfoundation.org/) by clicking on the tab for the Planned Giving Program. Please forward inquiries to: info@eesfoundation.org. Or call 410.266.3390.

Last Call for the Student Video Competition: What can individuals do to help reduce climate change?

The deadline for the the Student Video Competition, put together by the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP) and the Environmental Engineering and Science Foundation (EESF), is quickly approach. Entry forms must be submitted by December 18, 2016.

This year we asked students to consider "What can individuals do to help reduce climate change?" The video is intended to motivate individuals to change daily habits that cause carbon emissions that may contribute to climate change. To help people understand the roles of Environmental Engineers and Scientists, the video should end with brief references as to how Environmental Engineers and Scientists are working on climate issues.

The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students studying environmental engineering or sciences worldwide. Target audiences include students in 8th grade and higher as well as the general public. The videos are a great way to engage students in an important societal challenge, develop team skills, and communicate effectively. The winning teams will receive prize money. We are hoping to also raise funds to cover travel to Washington D.C. for a few of the students.

Here is a link to the contest information: http://www.eesfoundation.org/student-video-competition/.

Please reach out to your student and professor colleagues and encourage them to participate!

The Academy invites you to sign up for a listing in the 2017 Environmental Engineering and Science Resource Guidebook. We are releasing the Guidebook in both electronic and print format to make this year's edition easier to use and easier to distribute to individuals and organizations looking to connect with environmental specialists. We are expanding the content that each listing receives – enabling web links in the e-version and providing more room to post information on your specialties in both versions. We expect to print and distribute the new publication more widely than we have in the past, with a special focus on outreach at the trade events and conferences we attend during the year. We are also planning an expanded role for the Guidebook in making federal, state, and local agencies aware of the capabilities of our members in helping deal with current environmental engineering needs.

Ask your organization to reserve its space by February 15, 2017. It's great exposure for a low cost. For details, email JSOlmo@aaees.org. To download the reservation form, click here.

Academy Selected As the Lead Society for ABET Environmental Science Program

Reaching the culmination of efforts that go back for several years, the Academy was approved by the ABET Applied Science Area Delegation (the part of the ABET Board of Delegates that oversees work of the Applied Science Accreditation Commission) as the lead professional society for the accreditation of environmental science programs. The ABET staff were confident in their finding that, based on the Academy's long track record of performance in support of ABET's environmental engineering program, AAEES is capable of the task. A key factor in making this determination was that the Academy has already spent considerable effort in creating its own certification program for environmental scientists. With this foundation to build on, the ABET Applied Science Area Delegation determined that the Academy is the logical and appropriate society to lead accreditation of environmental science programs in the US and in such programs around the world.

This is a significant development for the AAEES as it places the Academy in a position of determining the structure and content of environmental engineering and environmental science programs. Or put another way, it means that the Academy will be positioned to reflect the needs of its membership and Patrons in determining the knowledge that will be required to earn a college degree in environmental engineering or environmental science.

Remembering Lawrence A. Bock

USA Science and Engineering Festival visionary and founder Lawrence A. Bock - a tireless advocate for STEM education and innovation - died July 7 of pancreatic cancer at his home in the San Diego area. He was 56.

Richard Pope, Chair of the AAEES K-12 Education Committee, noted that his passing is a profound loss, "but his legacy of inspiring math and science education will have a lasting impact on students and our nation for future generations."

Larry launched the San Diego Science Festival to educate and inspire our next generation to pursue STEM careers. He then evolved this into the USA Science & Engineering Festival, the nation's largest science festival held biennially in Washington, D.C. with an estimated 300,000 attendees at the session in April of this year.

In addition to his work with the Festival, Larry was a serial entrepreneur who founded, co-founded or financed the early stage growth of 40 companies from inception to an aggregate market capitalization of $70 billion.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, contributions may be made to Science Spark to assist in ensuring the continuation of the USA Science and Engineering Festival, his crowning achievement. The Festival combines his love of science, entrepreneurship, sense of adventure, and his fondest hopes and dreams as a Dad. Click here to donate.

Evaluation of the Predictive Ecological Model for the Edwards Aquifer Habitat Conservation Plan: An Interim Report as Part of Phase 2 (2016)

An ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is in the process of reviewing the many different scientific initiatives underway to support the Edwards Aquifer Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP). The Committee to Review the Edwards Aquifer Habitat Conservation Plan is focusing on the adequacy of information to reliably inform assessments of the HCP's scientific initiatives, ensuring that these initiatives are based on the best-available science. The study spans from 2014 to 2018 and will result in three reports. At the conclusion of Phase 1, the Committee issued its first report (NRC, 2015), which focused on hydrologic modeling, ecological modeling, water quality and biological monitoring, and the Applied Research Program. The Committee will issue its second report in late 2016 and its third and final report in 2018.

This interim report is part of Phase 2 activities and will be incorporated, as an appendix, into the second report. This interim report focuses on the ecological modeling only and is being provided prior to the issuance of the second report in order for the Committee's comments (which take the form of conclusions and recommendations) to be considered while the ecological modeling team is still in place. ABET Commentary Document

At the recommendation of the AAEES Engineering Education Committee, we are posting a document on the AAEES web site that is a "Commentary" on the ABET Environmental Engineering Program Criteria. This document was generated on behalf of the Academy by the members of the Education Committee. The document is primarily intended to:

  • assist AAEES/ABET program evaluators in applying the Environmental Engineering program criteria, and
  • assist Environmental Engineering program administrators in preparing for ABET visits.

This document will be maintained and reviewed for update annually by the Education Committee. Just click on this link to download the PDF of the "Commentary."

A second purpose of this document is to inform the Academy membership of the work that ABET and the Academy are collaborating on to maintain and update the standards that college and university environmental engineering programs must meet when seeking accreditation from ABET.

The "Commentary" is intended for public dissemination on behalf of the Academy's Education Committee. We believe it will make an important contribution to the 2016-17 accreditation cycle that is now beginning. We hope the "Commentary" will serve as a touchstone for educators as they close out the 2015-16 academic year and begin the important task of updating their programs to keep them at the forefront of the evolution of the environmental field.

Nominations for AAEES Representative to the ABET Board of Delegates

The AAEES Education Committee is soliciting nominations for the position of AAEES Delegate to the ABET Board of Delegates.

The ABET Board of Delegates meets twice per year (usually in or near Baltimore, MD). The ABET Board of Delegates is responsible for oversight of accreditation operations, election of the ABET Board of Directors, and representing sponsoring organizations. Delegates serve a term of three years, and may be reappointed a maximum of one time for a total of six years. The AAEES Delegate also serves on one or more of the three ABET Area Delegations that meet at the same time. The three Area Delegations to which AAEES will have representation are the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC), and the Applied Science Accreditation Commission (ASAC). Area and Board Delegates of ABET may not serve in multiple roles as Delegate, Officer, Director, or Commissioner.

Preferred qualifications for this appointment include experience as an ABET Program Evaluator and experience as a member of one of the ABET commissions, although exceptional candidates without these qualifications are also encouraged to apply. If you are interested in being considered for an appointment either as the AAEES Delegate or Alternate Delegate, or would like to nominate someone else, please forward your nomination(s) to the Chair of the AAEES Education Committee, David Chin at dchin@miami.edu. The deadline for nominations is June 15, 2016.
