Happy Holidays

Season's Greetings!!

The leaders and staff of the Academy extend sincere wishes for Happy Holidays and a prosperous 2020 to all members and their families and friends. Thank you for your commitment to the Academy.

Joyce Dowen is Retiring!!!

As some of you have already heard, Joyce Dowen will be retiring from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists on December 31, 2019.

Joyce has served AAEES for more than twenty years. She began working for what was then known as the American Academy of Environmental Engineers (AAEE) in 1998. She started out as the shipping manager for the AAEE Environmental Engineering Bookstore and retires as the Academy's Executive Assistant. But the title of Executive Assistant doesn't come close to covering the scope of her duties. Like the rest of us at AAEES, her duties are too long and numerous to list - and hers are among the Academy's most important.

She is often the first voice that you hear when you call headquarters. She is the point person for those of you who are renewing your specialty certification, walking you through the auditing process, and managing your shipments for trade shows.

If you've spent any time on the phone with Joyce, then you've gotten only a glimpse of what we in the office get to see every day. She is kind, helpful, accommodating, patient, knowledgeable, and understanding, with a ready wit and story to tell.

Though we know that she is only a text message away, we at AAEES headquarters will miss having Joyce around. To say that she leaves big shoes to fill is an understatement!

Feel free to send your well wishes to Joyce at JDowen@aaees.org. And while you're at it, don't forget to renew your specialty certification.

Beginning January 1, 2020, your new contact for many of the duties once handled by Joyce is Susannah Walz (SWalz@aaees.org) who also serves as the Academy's Financial Manager.

2020 Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science Competition and Awards

These projects will be judged within their submitted category and also in a new, one-time-only category, the "50th Anniversary of the 1970 Clean Air Act". Double your chances of winning! Please indicate if your project includes the Clean Air process (and its variants) on the Reservation Form.

2020 Environmental Communications (EComm) Awards

Communicating with a diverse set of stakeholders, as well as the public at large, can be a complex and challenging task. Communication and marketing plans must be designed to address the objectives and strategies of a campaign's need to reach a target audience. With this in mind, AAEES is proud to offer this area of competition and invites consulting firms and municipal agencies alike to enter.

Completed entries for the EComm Awards Competition must be uploaded by March 1, 2020. You may submit the reservation form at any time, but it is advised that you do so early to ensure that you have sufficient time to review the instructions and test your secured drop box before the March 1st deadline.

2020 Environmental Engineering and Science Resource Guidebook

Sign Up for Your Listing

The Academy invites you to have your organization sign up for a listing in the 2020 Environmental Engineering and Science Resource Guidebook. We are releasing the Guidebook in both digital and web formats to make the publication easier to use and easier to distribute to individuals and organizations looking to connect with environmental specialists. We are expanding the content that each listing receives – enabling web links in the e-version and providing more room to post information on your specialties in both versions. We expect to distribute the Environmental Engineering and Science Resource Guidebook more widely than ever. We are also planning an expanded role for the Guidebook in making federal, state, and local agencies aware of the capabilities of our members in helping deal with current environmental engineering and science needs.

Have your organization reserve its space by March 15, 2020. It's great exposure for a low cost. For details, email JSOlmo@aaees.org. To download the reservation form, click here.

Call for Speakers for the 2020 NJWEA/AAEES Workshop on Resilient Utility Management - Plan, Respond, Recover and Adapt

AAEES is sponsoring a workshop at the New Jersey Water Environment Association's (NJWEA) 105th annual conference. The workshop will be held in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Monday, May 11, 2020, with a special breakfast session on Tuesday morning to close out the workshop.

You are invited to submit an abstract for consideration to present at the workshop on the topic of resiliency in utility management, especially managing risks to minimize interruptions and ensure efficient operations for safeguarding public health and the environment. The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners defines resiliency as robustness and recovery characteristics of utility infrastructure and operations, which avoid or minimize interruptions of service during an extraordinary and hazardous event.

This workshop is intended both for specialists as well as for other environmental professionals interested in hearing from researchers and practitioners who are advancing the state of the art. The audience may include representatives of regulated community such as municipalities and utility authorities, as well as environmental consultants, and equipment suppliers. Attendees can receive continuing education credits.

The NJWEA was the first society for wastewater treatment professionals in the United States. It was a model for similar groups in other states and led to the formation of today's Water Environment Federation. This conference draws thousands of industry professionals from the NJ-NY-PA region.

Abstracts and biographical forms are due Tuesday, December 3, 2019. Presentations would need to be submitted by April 2020.

Please send a proposed title and abstract and a brief bio using the forms indicated below:

The 2019 Civil and Environmental Engineering Career & Internship Fair

The American Society of Civil Engineers, American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists, and Chi Epsilon, the National Honor Society for Civil Engineers, are holding the 2019 Annual Fall Civil and Environmental Engineering Career Fair!

The CEE Career Fair provides potential employers a unique opportunity to network with students and alumni. The Fair also enables public acknowledgement for these organizations' support for UC Irvine's Civil and Environmental Engineering department and affiliated clubs. The Fair serves as a platform for recruiting highly motivated CEE students for full time, part time, or internship positions. Last year, more than 200 Civil and Environmental engineering students stood in line to meet with recruiters from many respected and successful organizations from both the public and private sectors. This gave the students a unique opportunity to gain valuable networking experience as well as connections that will be a key part of their job search after graduating.

This event will be held at the University of California, Irvine on Tuesday, October 22nd, 2019 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at the UCI Student Center in Emerald Bay. Companies may register through the UCI Eventbrite page, or by sending a physical check to the address specified in the packet. Big Change Coming in AAEES Elections

online voting

The May to June timeframe is when we hold elections for the Academy's officers and trustees. Until now, that meant a massive mailing on the part of the Academy to put the paper ballot into the members' hands, along with some supporting materials and a non-postage-paid return envelope.

You'll notice the key phrase, until now. That's right! We are changing over to running our elections electronically. Working with an experienced and highly-regarded firm whose business is doing elections for not-for-profit organizations, we will be implementing this year's election totally electronically. Rather than handling paper and doing manual ballot counts, each eligible member will be sent an electronic ballot that looks a lot like what we've been doing in previous years. The difference will be that it takes one click to open the ballot, a few more clicks to vote for your candidates, and one more to submit your vote.

With this system there will be every incentive to vote immediately rather than put it off, and running the risk of never actually voting. So when you see an item in your inbox that says AAEES Election please do us a favor and set aside a few minutes to take care of that ballot right away. The system we are using for the online election is myDirectVote so the email will be coming from directvote.net.

Taking care of this right away will guarantee that you get no more reminders. Or conversely, not responding will guarantee that you do get a reminder if you are too busy with other things to fill out the ballot right then.

The bottom line is that we expect to see participation rates improve by at least 30% and possibly more. We see this change as being good for our members and good for the Academy. Please feel free to contact us with any comments you might have on how the new process worked for you and what changes or improvements you might recommend for the next cycle in 2020.

Thanks for taking the time to cast your ballot.

AAEES Member Elected to NAE

We are proud to announce that one of our very own AAEES Board Certified members has been elected to join The National Academy of Engineering (NAE). John Koon, Ph.D., P.E., BCEE, ENV SP, NAE is one of the 86 new members and 18 foreign members who will be joining The National Academy of Engineering.

Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature" and to "the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education." Individuals in the newly elected class will be formally inducted during a ceremony at the NAE's annual meeting in Washington, D.C., on October 6, 2019.

John Koon, Ph.D., P.E., BCEE, ENV SP, NAE has been a member of AAEES for over 29 years. He is the president of John H. Koon & Associates, Atlanta. Koon was elected to The National Academy of Engineering for his valuable contributions to the design of systems to treat chemically complex industrial wastewaters.

"It is an incredible honor," Koon said. "I'm delighted to be included in this remarkable group of engineers."

2019 Environmental Engineering and Science Resource Guidebook - Sign Up for Your Listing

The Academy invites you to sign up for a listing in the 2019 Environmental Engineering and Science Resource Guidebook. We are releasing the Guidebook in both electronic and print format to make this year's edition easier to use and easier to distribute to individuals and organizations looking to connect with environmental specialists. We are expanding the content that each listing receives – enabling web links in the e-version and providing more room to post information on your specialties in both versions. We expect to print and distribute the new publication more widely than we have in the past, with a special focus on outreach at the trade events and conferences we attend during the year. We are also planning an expanded role for the Guidebook in making federal, state, and local agencies aware of the capabilities of our members in helping deal with current environmental engineering needs.

Ask your organization's sales and marketing team to reserve its space by March 31, 2019. It provides great exposure for a small investment. For details, email JSOlmo@aaees.org. Click here to download the 2019 Reservation Form.

The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Final Book Now Available

Title: Environmental Engineering for the 21st Century: Addressing Grand Challenges

The National Academies of Sciences, Medicine, and Engineering study on Grand Challenges for Environmental Engineering in the 21st Century has been completed and a written report is now available. The report can be purchased in physical form or as a free download pdf document. Environmental challenges continue to multiply as the global population expands toward 10 billion people by 2050 and as demands for clean water, food, and energy rise, all in the context of global climate change.

The study brought together experts in a wide range of fields who, with input from the scientific community and the broader public, identified the foremost challenges that environmental engineers and scientists will be expected to address over the next several decades. The study also describes how practitioners in the field - with assistance from colleges and universities - will need to evolve to better address those challenges. The study's conclusions are a testament to the multidisciplinary, pragmatic, systems-oriented approach that characterizes environmental engineering. The report can be purchased in paperback format for $45.00.
